Port Services

A keystone of George Hammond PLC is the provision of port services. From our head office in Dover we are ideally positioned to perform a wide range of stevedoring and freight forwarding tasks on behalf of our many clients. We are trusted by all the major names in reefer shipping and handle cargo from West Africa and Central America every week. Indeed, our services have helped transform Dover into a leading UK hub for the year-round import of fresh produce.

One of the keys to the success of our port services division is the vast experience of our team. Based within the port of Dover our staff offer a comprehensive range of services, from Customs entry and clearance, liaison with ships' agency and stevedores, cargo sorting and handling, ambient and temperature controlled storage, box end labelling, off-quay bonded storage as well as full and part load transport and freight forwarding to the UK and other European destinations.

Our dedicated handling team achieve an average discharge rate of 100 pallets per hour with peak discharge rates far in excess of this. With the majority of vessels discharging part cargoes at Dover, a quick dispatch and the port's unique position adjacent to the shipping lanes in the Dover Strait allow vessels to discharge and sail to ports such as Antwerp (12 hours), Zeebrugge (6 hours), Rotterdam (10 hours) or Hamburg (24 hours), often in time for a next morning commencement.
